Elín was the daughter of Bjarni Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, who moved west at the turn of the century. She grew up in their home near Foam Lake in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and then moved with them west to the Pacific. Þorsteinn came to the West in 1900 with his parents, Guðmundur Torfason and Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir. They settled in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnvatnsbyggð) in Manitoba where Þorsteinn lived until 1920. He moved to Winnipeg but then moved west to Seattle, Washington in 1924. Elín and Þorsteinn moved to California in 1930 and lived in Los Angeles until 1954 when they moved to Belmont.
