Ella was the daughter of Magnús Þórðarson and Jóhanna Þorsteinsdóttir in Blaine. Gunnlaugur was the son of Helgi Þorsteinsson and Dagbjört Dagbjartsdóttir, pioneer settlers at Point Roberts in 1894. Gunnlaugur completed primary school education at Point Roberts and nautical studies from a seaman’s school in Seattle. He worked at sea and was a captain from 1919 to 1935, then he stopped fishing and became a farmer at Point Roberts. They lived there the rest of their lives.
