Elvin Ólafur Hannesson was born in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan on September 14, 1918. He had the last name Kristjánsson in the west.

Elvin was the son of Hannes Kristjánsson and Kristín Ingibjörg Ólafsdóttir, early settlers in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð). Margrét was the daughter of Ólafur Jónsson Vopni and Stefanía Ingibjörg Árnadóttir who came west in 1893. Elvin attended elementary and high school in Mountain and attended university in N. Dakota and Washington. He worked for Pacific Inter Mountain Express in Oakland, California and became the branch manager of the same company’s eastern states branch in 1969.
