Fjóla was the daughter of Jón Jónsson and Guðbjörg Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. She grew up there and attended school in Garðar. The young woman moved to Winnipeg where she attended Success Business College 1921-1921. She started working at Columbia Press, where both Lögberg and Heimskringla newspapers were printed. She taught for a while at Success Business College, but then joined the law firm Johnson & Bergman. In August 1926 she moved west to the Pacific and settled in Seattle. She lived there the rest of her life.
