Gunnlaugur Gústaf Valdimarsson was born on May 14, 1899 in Pembina, N. Dakota. He took his father’s name in the west.

Gunnlaugur was the son of Valdimar Gíslason and Guðríður Teitsdóttir. Dagmar’s parents were Stefán Nikulásson and Una Hálfdánardóttir. Gunnlaugur grew as high as the grass in N. Dakota and then moved with his parents to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1920. Dagmar came west in 1913 with her parents and lived with them in Minnesota until 1918. The family moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð). Gunnlaugur was a farmer in the Lakes Settlement and also worked as a carpenter. In 1914, Gunnlaugur moved to Vancouver and lived there until death.
