Gestur Sigurgeirsson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on August 29, 1873.  He died in Blaine, Washington on January 9, 1951. He took the name Gestur S. Stephanson in the west.

Gestur was the son of Sigurgeir Stefánsson of Eyjafjörður and his wife, Sesselja Friðfinnsdóttir who came west in 1882 and lived a long time in Selkirk, Manitoba. Gestur was taken in as a foster after his parents came west. He himself came to Manitoba in 1889. The first few years he was a laborer in the Argyle settlement, but then took over mail transport between Winnipeg and Selkirk. He then lived in Winnipeg and got a job there at Arinbjörn Bardal’s funeral service. Herdís came west alone in 1901 and settled in Winnipeg. After they were married, they moved west to Blaine, Washington.
