Gísli was the son of Tómas Sumarliði Tómasson, a farmer Leslie in the Lakes settlement in Saskatchewan (Vatnabyggð) and Guðbjörg Konráðsdóttir. He grew up and attended school there. He was in the Canadian Navy 1941-1945, then became a farmer near Leslie in the Lakes settlement. Sólmánína was the daughter of Jakob Jónsson Norman and his second wife, Guðríður Gísladóttir, in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan.
