Gróa was the daughter of Helgi Þorsteinsson and Dagbjört Dagbjartsdóttir who came west in 1887 and settled at Point Roberts, Washington in 1894. Kolbeinn arrived there in 1909 with his foster parents. Kolbeinn was the son of Pétur Guðmundsson and Guðrún Jónasdóttir and at the age of one he moved with them to Svínadal in Húnavatnssýsla. There he was fostered by Jóhannes Sæmundsson and Línbjörg Ólafsdóttir and came west with them to Winnipeg in 1900.
