Guðlaug Jónasdóttir was born in Baldur, Manitoba on July 2, 1893.

Guðlaug was the daughter of Jónas Helgason and Sigríður Einarína Sigurðardóttir who came west from Vopnafjörður in 1888 and settled in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba. George’s parents were Jónas Jóhannesson and Rósa Sigurbjörg Einarsdóttir who came west in 1888. Guðlaug grew up in the Argyle settlement, attended elementary school there, and then went to Winnipeg to a girls’ school. There she also studied piano and organ, and was an organist at Grundarkirkja in Argyle for about two decades. She moved to Edmonton where she lived for a few years, but from there she made her way west to Vancouver. She always sang in church choirs, first in Argyle, then Edmonton and finally in Vancouver. She taught Sunday school almost all her life.
