Guðlaugur’s parents, Bjarni Jakobsson and Halldóra Bjarnadóttir, came west to Manitoba in 1887 and took land in the Geysir settlement in New Iceland which they named Bjarnastaðir. Hermína was the daughter of Jóhannes Magnússon, d. in Winnipeg on March 26, 1910, and Helga Sigríður Jónasdóttir of Eyjafjarðarsýsla.
