Guðmundur Matthías Bjarnason was born in Helgafellssveit in Snæfellsnessýsla on July 5, 1871.

Guðmundur came west to Winnipeg in 1900 and was a house painter. Halldóra grew up in Grafton but moved to Winnipeg at the age of seven. There she finished high school and attended various courses in painting, the first of Icelandic women in the West.
