Guðmundur was the son of Björn Jósefsson and Þóra Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in N. Dakota in 1883. They moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905 and took land in the Kandahar/Dafoe area. Guðmundur grew up there and he and his wife lived in Elfros. They later moved to Saskatoon. Hólmfríður was the daughter of Sveinn Kristjánsson and Veroníka Þorkelsdóttir, early settlers in N. Dakota in 1883.
