Guðmundur was the son of Þorsteinn Guðmundsson and Þórunn Ólafsdóttir, who came west after 1910. Guðmundur was ten years old when he came west. He graduated from school in Riverton in 1916, got a job fishing on Lake Winnipeg and later farm work in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He studied at Success Business College in Winnipeg and then worked in a bank. Georgina’s parents were Hannes Þórðarson (Henry Thompson) and Guðný Brynjólfsdóttir.
