Guðmundur Sólmundarson was born in Borgarfjarðarsýsla on November 3, 1879.

Guðmundur’s parents, Sólmundur Símonarson and Guðrún Aradóttir, came west in 1885 and Guðmundur came with them. They first lived in Mikley in New Iceland but, after two years, they moved to Gimli. Guðmundur became a fisherman and captain of a fishing boat, fishing and transporting goods on Lake Winnipeg for 32 years. Lovísa was the daughter of Pétur Guðlaugsson Buch and Sigurbjörg Bjarnadóttir who came west in 1876.
