Guðný was the daughter of Einar Guðmundsson Goodman and Þórstína Þorsteinsdóttir who came west to Minnesota in 1890 and later to Mary Hill near Lundar. Kjartan was the son of Kristinn Guðmundsson and Sigurbjörg Jónsdóttir of Borgarfjarðarsýsla. They came west in 1887 and lived in Winnipeg. Kjartan grew up in his parent’s home in Winnipeg and learned the printing business. He joined the Canadian Army and went to Europe in 1915 during the First World War. He was badly wounded a year later and was sent home to Canada. He worked as a printer in Winnipeg until 1929, then moved to Lundar.
