Sigurður was the son of Þórður Sigurjónsson of S. Þingeyjarsýsla and Jóna Sólveig Sigurðardóttir from Mountain, N. Dakota. They were pioneer settlers in the Lake settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1909. Guðrún (Rúna) was the daughter of Bjarni Friðriksson and Helga Stefánsdóttir, who settled in Vatnabyggð near Wynyard. Sigurður and Guðrún lived in Vatnabyggð all their lives, Sigurður was a farmer but later a wheat merchant, manager of a construction company, and supervisor of a health center.
