Guðmundur was 14 years old when he came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1886. His parents, Þorbergur Fjeldsted and Helga Guðmundsdóttir arrived there a year later. They lived in Mikley and Guðmundur lived there a few years. He moved in 1890 to Winnipeg where he lived for 8 years. In 1898 he moved back to New Iceland, lived in Gimli, but then bought the land Ölduland in the Víðirnes settlement in 1902.
