Guðrún came to the West in 1890 with her parents, Eiríkur Eiríksson and Guðlaug Helgadóttir. The family settled in Winnipeg and Guðrún lived there for many years. She finished high school there and then enrolled in Success Business College in 1890. She moved to Arborg and worked there as a shop assistant for seven years. She then returned to Winnipeg and entered nursing school at Grace Hospital in 1918-19. She then took over a cashier job at Eaton’s for a year, but then worked in nursing in many locations in Canada until 1936.
