Þórarinn came to the West in 1888 and traveled to Winnipeg. Guðrún was the daughter of Jósef Björnsson and Málfríður Hallgrímsdóttir who came west in 1878. Þórarinn and Guðrún began farming near Baldur, Manitoba but moved in 1904 to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. They settled near Elfros and farmed there.
