Sigurður moved to the United States at a young age and worked as a fisherman out of Boston for 10 years. He then returned to Iceland. In 1904 Sigurður and his first wife, Þuríður Sigfúsdóttir, moved to Manitoba and settled in Selkirk. There, Sigurður worked in a mental asylum.
