Gustav Sivertz was born in Victoria on Vancouver Island on July 29 1895.

Gustav was the son of Kristján Sigurgeirsson Sivertz and Elinborg S Samúelsdóttir in Victoria. He joined the Canadian Army on July 7, 1916 and fought in France. He was a provincial government forester in British Columbia after the war, then went to graduate school, studied optical surveying and worked at it for many years. He fought in World War II 1941-1945, then a reporter for the News Herald in Vancouver.
