Halldóra was the daughter of Jón Júlíus Árnason and his second wife Guðrún Halldóra Sigurðardóttir, both from Skagafjarðarsýsla. She was taken in as a foster child at a few years old by Tryggvi Ólafsson and Berglaug Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in the Hóla settlement in Manitoba. She attended high school in Glenboro where she worked various jobs. In 1940 she moved to Winnipeg where she got a job in a drugstore.
