Halldóra was the daughter of Lárus Guðmundsson (Goodman) and Ingibjörg Guðmundsdóttir, who came west in 1887. Steindór went to Akureyri as a child and attended school there. At a young age, he got a job in a store, and that experience proved to be a good teacher when, in 1913, he moved to Winnipeg. He first worked at painting houses in the summer and fishing in the winter. He then got a job in Jóhann Thorgeirson’s grocery store and after two years he and Jakob Kristjánsson bought the store. In 1926, he bought Jakob’s share and ran the store alone until 1955. He was very involved in the social activities of his countrymen in the city, was on the board of the Icelandic National League and Islendingadagurinn. He played in various activities of his countrymen in the city.
