Halldóra grew up in Grafton. Her parents were Halldór Jónsson and Sigurbjörg Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1876. At the age of seven, Halldóra went to Winnipeg. There she finished middle school and attended various courses in painting, the first of Icelandic women in the West. Guðmundur moved to Winnipeg in 1900 and was a house painter. They always lived in Winnipeg.
