Hallgerður was the daughter of Jón Magnússon and Þorgerður Eysteinsdóttir in Duluth who were first in Keewatin, Ontario, later in Selkirk and Winnipeg. Hallgerður completed her middle school and teacher’s degree and taught at schools in several of the Icelandic settlements in Manitoba. Davíð was the son of Björn Hjálmarsson and Guðrún Bjarnadóttir in Húnavatnssýsla. He was there for the first years of his life but was sent west to the fjörd and went to school in Hnífsdal. From there, his path led to Skagafjörður, where he attended the farm school at Hólum, and after graduating in 1914, he was hired as a teacher at the school. His mind turned to something else, and he moved to Reykjavík where he studied carpentry in 1916. He moved to the West in 1924.
