Hermann was the son of Ásgeir Þorbergsson Fjeldsted in Arborg, Manitoba and Ingunn Guðfinna Kristjónsdóttir of the Hnausa Settlement. He went to school in Arborg, got a job at Sigurdson-Thorvaldson Co. in the Hnausa Settlement where he worked until 1943. That year he enlisted in the Canadian army and was appointed a supply manager. He moved to Winnipeg as a newlywed and lived there.
