Hjálmar Ágúst Eiríksson was born in Garðar, N. Dakota on August 22, 1881. He died in Winnipeg on January 20, 1948. He had the name Hjálmar Á. E. Bergmann in the west.

Hjálmar was the son of Eiríkur Hjálmarsson Bergmann and Ingibjörg Pétursdóttir Thorlacius, pioneer settlers in Garðar, N. Dakota. Emilía was the daughter of Jón Jónsson and Guðbjörg Guðmundsdóttir, also early settler in Garðar. Hjálmar pursued education and became a lawyer who practiced for many years in Winnipeg.
