Hjálmar came west with his mother, Anna Hjálmarsdóttir, to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1906 and moved from there to the Þingvalla settlement in Saskatchewan. His father, Ólafur Loftsson, was there to meet them, having come west in 1888. Hjálmar worked in Churchbridge, then at a bank in Bredenbury but then settled in Foam Lake in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð).
