Hjörtur was the son of the couple Hans Guðbrandsson and Lilja Guðmundsdóttir, pioneer settlers in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba and later in N. Dakota. He moved to the Point Roberts peninsula in Washington in 1918 and bought 80 acres of land. Helga was the daughter of Þorsteinn Antoníusarson and Sigríður Erlendsdóttir, early settlers in the Argyle settlement. Hjörtur and Helga lived the rest of their lives at Point Roberts.
