Jóel Sigurbjörnsson was born in Vopnafjörður in N. Múlasýsla on April 12, 1886.
Spouse: 1) 1909 Þóra Rósa Sigurðardóttir b. in Húnavatnssýsla on December 30, 1874, d. May 10, 1956. She had the last name Laxdal in the west. 2) 1957 Lillian Rossor.
Children: With Þóra: 1. Marínó b. May 12, 1909 2. Sigurbjörn b. April 12, 1911 3. Sigmundur b. May 3, 1914.
Jóel was the son of Sigurbjörn Sigurðsson and Oktavía Jónsdóttir and came west with them in 1894. He lived with them in N. Dakota but in 1907 moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He lived a short distance from Mozart. Later he was in Gladstone, Manitoba. Þóra came west in 1888 with her parents, Sigurður Sigurðsson and María Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota.
