Jóhann grew up in Iceland with relatives. His parents, Friðrik Guðmundsson and Þorgerður Jónsdóttir, came to the West in 1905. Friðrik visited Iceland in 1919 and Jóhann came back west with him the same year. Jóhann became a pastor and served Icelandic congregations in many parts of Manitoba, also in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
