Jóhann grew up in the home of his parents, Sveinn Kristjánsson and Veronika Þorkelsdóttir in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Þorbjörg was the daughter of Sveinn Sveinsson and Guðrún Símonardóttir in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. Jóhann took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1905, but agriculture didn’t suit him, so he sold the land and started in construction. He later settled in Dafoe in the Lakes Settlement and ran a grocery store.
