Jóhanna Guðmundsdóttir was born on August 8, 1867 in Dísastaðasel in Breiðdal in S. Múlasýsla. She died in the Fljóts Settlement on July 18, 1904 in New Iceland.

Jóhanna was the daughter of Guðmundur Marteinsson and his first wife, Jóhanna Guðmundsdóttir from Tóarsel in S. Múlasýsla. Jóhanna lost her mother soon after birth, and followed her father and stepmother, Kristína Gunnlaugsdóttir, to the West in 1878. Jóhanna first lived with them in New Iceland but moved to Winnipeg in 1899. She was visiting her half-sister Helga in New Iceland when she died.
