Jóhannes came to the West in 1874 with his father, Jason Þórðarson and Anna Jóhannesdóttir. They lived in Ontario from the summer of 1875, then moved to New Iceland where they lived until 1879. They followed Rev. Páll Þorláksson to N. Dakota in 1879 and settled in the Sand Hill Settlement (Sandhæðabyggð). Guðrún was the daughter of Jörundur Sigmundsson and Auður Grímsdóttir. Jörundur died in Iceland in 1876. Auður’s second husband was Þórður Gunnarsson and they brought Auður’s daughters to the West in 1882 and settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Guðrún and Jóhannes met in N. Dakota and began farming there. In 1900, they moved to Canada, together with Jason, Jóhannes’ father, and they settled near Red Deer, Alberta. They lived there, but later moved to Mozart, Saskatchewan.
