After completing elementary school, Jóhannes attended the Jón Bjarnason School in Winnipeg from 1924-26. He worked as a clerk for the Eaton’s department store chain in Winnipeg. Bergljót was the daughter of poet Guttormur Guttormsson and Jensína Júlía Daníelsdóttir in Riverton.
