Jón was the son of Árni Hannesson and Helga Erlendsdóttir, who came west in 1888 and later lived in Langruth. Helga’s parents were Erlendur G Erlendsson and Margrét Finnbogadóttir. They came west in 1887 and settled in Manitoba. Jón was a storekeeper in Langruth and traded mainly in ironworks.
