Jón Henrik Björnsson was born in Minneota, Minnesota on February 9, 1919.

Jón Henrik was the son of Gunnar Björnsson and Ingibjörg Ágústína Jónsdóttir in Minneota, Minnesota. They he grew up but graduated from John Marshall High School in Minneapolis in 1937 and received a B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1941. He then joined the army and was sent to Iceland in June 1942, where his brother Edvard Hjálmar was in charge of the Americans’ special office regarding fish purchases. Jón Henrik worked there until March 1944, then went home to Minnesota and attended the US Army officer’s school. After completing his studies, he was sent to study on the continent of Europe. After the war in 1946, he was hired as advertising manager for Northwestern Bank in Minneapolis. Matthildur was the daughter of Reverend Ragnar Kvaran and Þórunn Hannesdóttir Hafstein.
