Jón Helgason was born on July 14, 1850 in Ísafjarðarsýsla.

They moved west to Manitoba in 1893 and settled in the Argyle settlement. They lived there for 9 years, but in 1902 they moved west to the Pacific coast and settled in Blaine. They were there for 4 years. In 1902, Jón bought 51 acres of land on Point Roberts on the southwest part of the peninsula. Before then, there were rather low buildings and Jón’s first job was to build a new apartment building where they lived for 14 years. In 1920, Jón sold the land and the houses, moved to Pleasant Valley, almost 13 km (8 miles) south of Blaine. Jón built a house there and was now assisted by his teenage son. The son planned to build himself a nice home where his parents could live with him in their later years. Jón and Guðrún lived there for the rest of their lives.
