Jón came to the West in 1903 with his parents, Gísli Jónsson and Sólrún Árnadóttir. They traveled to Manitoba and settled in Gladstone, Manitoba. Their path took them north to the Siglunes settlement, but after two years, they took land in Wapah in 1907. Jón raised livestock on two plots of land and fished in the winter. He handled postal services in the settlement and mail transportation for 30 years.
