Jón Sigurðsson was born in Mýrasýsla on July 1, 1863. He died on March 15, 1955 in Manitoba.

Jón and Guðríður came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with nine of their children in 1898. They lived for twelve years west of Brandon then moved to Swan Valley (Álftárdal) and took land 16 km (10 miles) south of the town of Bowsman.
