Jón was the son of Vigfús Bjarnason and Guðrún Ólafsdóttir, farmers in New Iceland. Jónína’s parent were Jónas Ólafsson and Margrét Magnúsdóttir in Þingeyjarsýsla. Jón fished as a young man, but gave it up in 1930 and turned to farming in Ósland. He took land nearby, where he and Jónína lived until their deaths.
