Jónas was the son of Rev. Eyjólfur Jónsson, a pastor in New Iceland, and his wife Ólafía Jónína Jónsdóttir Jónasson, a merchant in Gimli. Jónas studied at the University of Manitoba but then became a carpenter and worked at it in Huntington, British Columbia. Lillian was the daughter of Kári Stefánsson and Anna Mýrdal in Lundar. There she completed her primary education, went to Winnipeg for postgraduate studies and completed a B. Sc. degree in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. Then she took up teaching, teaching for six years in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
