Karl Ólafur Friðfinnsson was born on July 23 1898 in Kelduland in Gimli, Manitoba. He had the name Karl F Einarsson in the west.

Karl was the son of Friðfinnur Einarsson and Salbjörg Jakobína Jóhannsdóttir in Gimli. He lived with them until 1930 and did various jobs there in the area. He moved to Arborg that year and opened Arborg Garage. He was interested in community issues, was on the town council 1937-43, the local council in Bifröst 1943-52 and was mayor for a few years. He was very involved in the preparation and construction of the hospital, was on the building committee and its treasurer.
