Kjartan was the son of Kristinn Guðmundsson and Sigurbjörg Jónsdóttir in Borgarfjarðarsýsla. They came west in 1887 and lived in Winnipeg from then on. Kjartan grew up in his parents’ home in Winnipeg and learned the printing business. He joined the Canadian Army and went to Europe in 1915 during the First World War. He was badly wounded a year later and was sent home to Canada. He worked as a printer in Winnipeg until 1929, then moved to Lundar.
