Kristín was the daughter of Andrés Jónsson Skagfeld and Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir. Ólafur grew up in New Iceland, learned carpentry in Winnipeg but then turned to music. He studied both violin and piano. He worked at carpentry alone for 20 years, then started teaching music. He worked at it for nearly 40 years, during which time he prepared many students for examinations at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
