Kristín came west with her parents, Hermann Hjálmarsson and Guðlaug Magnea Ingibjörg Guðjohnsen, in 1890. Kristín grew up Garðar, N. Dakota pursued graduate studies at the Collegial and Normal School in Winnipeg. She became a teacher after graduation and taught in Garðar, Selkirk and Winnipeg. Jón was interested in politics from a young age and was a member of parliament for Pembina County 1920-32.
