Lára was the daughter of Sigurbjörn Benediktsson and Kristveig Jónsdóttir Freeman in Lundar. Oscar’s parents were Sigurbjörn Kristjánsson and Eiríka Sigurbjörg Sveinbjörnsdóttur in the Shoal Lake (Grunnavatn) settlement. At a young age, Oscar worked on his father’s farm near Otto in the Shoal Lake settlement. He joined the Canadian Army on June 11, 1942 and was stationed in England, the Mediterranean, and Central Europe during the Second World War. He was then discharged on August 19, 1946 and returned to farming when he came home.
