Helgi was the son of Ólafur Ólafsson and Helga Guðmundsdóttir, who came west in 1875-76. He attended elementary school in Winnipeg and Vestfold, Manitoba, then went to study commerce for a year. He was wounded in the Battle of Cambria in France. When he returned home, he worked as a farmhand and lived in Vestfold, later moving to Oak Point. He then opened a store and worked in it for many years. Lára was the daughter of Sigurður Eyfjörður (Eyford) and Bergljót Jónasdóttir, who came west in 1905.
