Margrét was the daughter of Dr. Ólaf Björnsson, a physician in Winnipeg, and his wife Sigríður Elínborg Jónsdóttir of the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. She earned a BA degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1935 and studied photography. She was filming in England during World War II when she met her husband. Sir Arthur’s ancestors in the 18th century were wealthy who made their money from trade. The family lived in The Manor House of Cleavedon, a medieval building from 1320 which became the family estate in 1790. It is one of the oldest buildings in England and had been inhabited for centuries. Numerous book and painting collections will have graced the halls there. Margrét always read a lot, worked on Icelandic poetry and wrote in English. See more in Icelandic Heritage below.
