Margrét was the daughter of Bjarni Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Benediktsdóttir from Gafli in Víðidal. Margrét came to the West with them in 1912. Ólafur’s parents were Ólafur Árnason and Sólrún Árnadóttir both of Mjóafjörður. He came west across the sea with them and his siblings in 1903, just 3 years old. The family settled in New Iceland the same year and there Ólafur grew up and, when age allowed, fished on Lake Winnipeg. After waiting 40 years, he moved to Vancouver where he worked as a carpenter.
